As they talk, we learn that MADDIE has been having problems with her boyfriend, TROY, who has been distant and unfaithful.
MADDIE: (coldly) Just get out.
CAROL: (encouragingly) Well, maybe you should try to find something else then.
TROY: (pleading) Maddie, don't be like that...
The play opens with a conversation between two friends, MADDIE and CAROL, who are discussing their lives and relationships. MADDIE is a strong-willed and independent woman, while CAROL is more timid and unsure of herself.
TROY: (calmly) Maddie, listen...
